Center for
Management & Executive Education
Custom Programs
Changes in the marketplace, evolving industry trends, or an unforeseen competitive challenge. Regardless of the catalyst, we are here to design custom executive and management courses that can ultimately add value throughout your organization. We invite you to contact us to schedule a custom programming consultation.
How it Works and What You Can Expect
The Center approaches each client request for custom programming individually, considering the unique needs of the client organization and the participant group. Along with the client, we identify learning outcomes for the program and then identify the topics that will best foster these outcomes.
Once we have determined the most appropriate topics, we select facilitators in our extensive network that can best speak to the topics and the learning objectives. All our facilitators are experts in their field, with extensive practical and academic backgrounds. They range from Crummer Graduate School faculty to independent consultants who work with global organizations. The facilitators work with the mission and values of the client organization to customize their subject areas. Additional customization happens once the sessions are in progress, with the facilitators tailoring the content and the in-class exercises to the participant groups in real time.
All sessions are designed to present not only the theory of the topic but also the application of the topic to current business practice. We pride ourselves on offering real-world discussions and solutions associated with business challenges. Our facilitators conduct the sessions in a highly interactive manner, offering many exercises, cases and discussion opportunities to allow the participants to digest and internalize the learning points.
The timing and delivery of custom programs is determined by the topics and the learning outcomes. Our facilitators and our experience guide us in determining how long a session is needed to adequately transfer learning on each topic. In general, most topics require 7 contact hours to sufficiently cover the salient points; in some cases the topic will require 14 contact hours. Our philosophy is to provide the appropriate timing both to cover the theoretical points of a topic and its practical application but to also allow for exercises and discussion that will ensure the transfer of learning and increase the likelihood of post-program application on the part of the participants.
Topics Designed for You
No two organizations are alike. Each face distinct challenges and opportunities that require specialized management and executive training. That’s why the Center for Management & Executive Education at Rollins College is pleased to offer this opportunity for custom programming.
Depending on the skill sets that your leaders need to succeed, we will match you with a team of expert facilitators with complementary knowledge. Topics can be broad-based and fundamental or targeted and complex. Subject matter can also be blended to meet your desired learning outcomes.
We can work with you to develop programs based on any of these listed topics, or work with you to design a program around a topic unique to your needs.
Building Business Acumen
This one-day course links transactions to financial statements and decision-making to reported results. Participants focus on externally reported financial statements and discuss the relevance of this information to internal usage. Using this form, participants examine the effects of various kinds of decisions that must be made and their impact on the operating and financial measures.
This program lends itself well to customization as our facilitator can work with the organizational financial statements as a basis for discussion in the session.
Change Management
Change Management
This session focuses on the change management model outlined in the book Switch by Chip Heath and Dan Heath. The model is presented as a tool to approach change in the organization and the environment. Additionally there is an assessment tool which can be included to provide further insight into how each individual approaches change.
Change Management – Managing People through Change, Business Model or Mental Model?
Few leaders realize the impact they have on those around them in bringing about successful change.
During this session participants explore:
- The limitations they place on themselves in succeeding in change
- The 7 steps to changing their own and other people’s minds
- The balance between business model and mental model in change management
- The critical role of emotional intelligence (EQ) in leading change
Conflict Management
Conflict Management: Embracing Differences for Achieving Better Results
Conflict is inevitable in organizations. Differing ideas, approaches, expectations, and opinions often lead to on-going conflict, strained relationships, decline in performance, and project derailment. What many leaders and organizations fail to grasp is that not all conflict is negative, painful or unpleasant. Harnessing the power of conflict can and should become a competitive advantage for organizations.
This session provides an approach to conflict resolution that emphasizes long-term relationships and lasting agreements. Using either a self or 360-degree assessment instrument, participants are able to assess the behaviors they typically display when faced with conflict and learn strategies for successfully modifying their behaviors for increased effectiveness.
Conflict Management – Building Conflict Competent Teams
Successful teams know that conflict is not to be avoided but embraced and explored. Conflict often results in new, previously unimagined opportunities, solutions and results.
This session provides team members with the skills to engage in the inevitable conflicts and develop conflict competence.
Critical Thinking
The ability to think critically has become a core management competency. “Strategizing” is no longer an activity reserved for only an elite group of top executives and strategic planners. Through the discovery and cultivation of their talents as critical thinkers and strategic leaders, participants will leave this program armed with the knowledge, skills, and tools needed translate ideas into sustainable competitive advantage.
This workshop will illustrate fundamental concepts in critical thinking; including asking the most relevant questions, sorting through information, reasoning from information provided and focusing on the most reliable and trustworthy solutions.
Customer Service Excellence
Customer service excellence is not just a matter of telling employees to “be nice to customers and smile.” Consistent excellent service is rare because it takes real commitment to make excellence business as usual. It is the responsibility of the entire organization. Using the Loyalty-Profit Chain developed by Harvard Business School as a platform, this session guides participants through the development of a Service Philosophy, Service Standards, and a Service Excellence Model, which looks at service “though the lens of the customer.” The service process is then flow charted, using a tool called the Service Map.
Decision Making and Problem Solving
The session focuses on the value of high-quality decisions and creative problem solving in leaders. Included in the session is an assessment tool that reveals the participants’ style for problem solving and decision making. During the debrief of the assessments, the facilitator leads a discussion around the effectiveness of the different approaches and the situations that might call for an alternate solution.
Effective Goal Setting
One of the challenges for managers and leaders is setting and attaining goals. With multiple distractions and many forces competing for time, it becomes paramount to be able to set and achieve goals to drive the department and the company forward.
In this session, participants consider why goals are important, how to set achievable goals and ways to measure progress towards those goals.
Enhancing Business Process
This class provides insights about how to produce high quality work at low costs, deliver quickly, and thereby generate great demand with high profit margins.
The components of the session include,
- Process Analysis: How to use Flow Chart Methods
- Supply Chain Management
- Breakeven Analysis
- Scoring Methods and Benchmarking
- Product Design: Innovation vs. Imitation (Products/Processes)
- Managing Quality
The goal of the session is to enhance business processes and supply chains for increased profit (long and short-term); and to insure sustainability of competitive effectiveness.
Business Ethics
In the current environment, managers and leaders are faced with the ethical implications of their decisions. The landscape of the business world requires that leaders understand the impact of decisions on the company, the customers, the employees, the community, the environment – and often beyond.
This session provides an opportunity for participants to discuss the complexity of ethical behavior and decision-making in business.
Executive Presence
Few executives reach their full performance potential. This is NOT because they lack the mechanical capabilities or business acumen but that they have yet to acknowledge their full leadership talents. During this session, participants will build their communication skills to deliver and make productive contributions and be identified as a high potential employee. Helping good leaders become great is the most valuable investment in a business career.
This program allows executives and senior managers to build on their natural talents and better manage the vulnerabilities and challenges. The program includes Myers-Briggs Type Instrument feedback, videotaped presentations, practice sessions and on-the-spot feedback. Developing communication techniques for executive style, presence, and power benefits professionals at all levels.
Finance
This workshop is delivered in two consecutive parts. The first part of the workshop covers fundamentals of financial accounting, including the conceptual framework of accounting, financial statements, and current topics in financial accounting. The second part of the workshop covers managerial accounting concepts and applications, including capital budgets, operating budgets, and performance measurement.
If you want to know how a company is doing, the first place to look is at the numbers. This workshop is appropriate for anyone who wants to enhance their understanding of internal and external accounting information generated by their company. At the conclusion of this module, participants will have a better understanding of how to interpret accounting information and of how accounting information is used to make decisions that affect the future operations of the company.
Influence
Influence – Influence without Authority
This session examines the specific steps of the necessary art of persuasion. Participants study how basic psychological needs motivate and inspire co-workers and teams and develop key takeaways that can be immediately implemented into daily actions to increase influence and impact in the organization.
The key learning objectives of this workshop include:
- Develop and utilize power from sources beyond an organization’s formal structure.
- Learn to quickly establish credibility and to use constructive persuasion and negotiation as viable influence tactics.
- Recognize individual differences and utilize persuasive communication patterns that attend to the unique needs and preferences of those you are attempting to influence.
- Learn to cultivate a powerful coalition and a broad network of relationships that support your initiatives.
Influence – Persuading People and Influencing Decisions
In today’s global economy, influencing has become an essential communication skill – managers need to influence more and command less, subordinates have critical information that should be heard, and external constituents (vendors, clients, the community) play an increasing role in accomplishing organizational objectives.
This session helps participants understand what influencing means and how it impacts their effectiveness. Participants will gain an understanding of their personal motive preferences, the preferences of others and application of these dynamics within the context of everyday interaction in and out of the office.
Leadership
Leadership – Emotional Intelligence
During this session participants explore results of higher emotional intelligence on the job – greater leadership leverage, and a better work environment. Emotional intelligence encompasses the skills of self-awareness, self-motivation, self-regulation, empathy and relationship building. All of these skills are critical to the success of individuals, teams and organizations. The program is designed to be experiential and allow participants to heighten their emotional intelligence. With heightened emotional intelligence, people are greater leaders, communicators, better collaborators; open to change and better decision makers.
Leadership – Listening Leadership
An important topic in any development program, leadership can be discussed in multiple ways. This session focuses on the convergence of leadership and listening skills and the importance of listening to leadership effectiveness. The value of listening goes far beyond common courtesy. It is fundamental to effective leadership and team success. This skill-based program will add value to the participant’s professional and personal lives. The four primary goals of this session are to raise awareness, give assessment opportunities, discuss application strategies, and challenge participants to take specific action based on the content.
Leveraging Conflict for Better Results
Our first reaction is to want to eliminate conflict and minimize disruption. We want our businesses to run smoothly, with agreeable people following mutually beneficial processes. Yet, very few of us exist in that perfect world of professional utopia. But that’s not all bad, because it can work to your advantage.
The Crummer School conflict management training program has been designed precisely to show you why – and how.
Got Conflict?
Of course you do. Conflict is inevitable in organizations. It stems from a variety of sources, such as:
- Differing ideas
- Disparate approaches
- Unclear expectations
- Immovable opinions
- Long-held beliefs
What’s most important, however, is what you and other leaders do when faced with struggles among your teams and stakeholders. Left unchecked, conflict leads to ongoing disagreement, strained relationships, declining performance, and, in the most extreme cases, complete project derailment.
This one-day program, held onsite at Rollins College, will teach you what today’s most successful leaders and organizations already know: that not all conflict is negative, painful or unpleasant. There are ways to leverage conflict so that it becomes a powerful force for innovation and thought leadership.
Managing Projects without Projects Managing You
This session readies participants to return to the workplace with an understanding of the project management discipline and will be armed with a “survival guide” of tools and tactics to tackle their next project management opportunity. Whether called upon to be the manager of the project or a participant on the project team, participants will have greater understanding, confidence and appreciation for how to see a project from start to finish.
Learning objectives include:
- Identifying project scope and dealing with scope creep
- Addressing accountability without formal authority
- Building a project team and keeping it together
- Managing the project and current workload
- Metrics and measurements for projects
Negotiations
Negotiations – Introductory Making Negotiations Work
There are proven practical negotiation strategies that can make a significant difference to leaders and their organizations. While we negotiate every day, not every individual has the skills to negotiate in the most effective manner. Based on the Fisher-Ury Model of win-win negotiation, this session offers the opportunity to strengthen career-enhancing management skills as a successful negotiator, in dealing with difficult people and overcoming hard bargainers, and in managing difficult business conversations.
This session leverages several Harvard Business School cases as practice and discussion for the group.
Negotiations – Advanced Negotiation Skills
Built as a follow-up session to the Making Negotiations Work course, this session delves further into the Fisher-Ury Model of negotiations and uses more complex cases from the Kellogg School of Business.
In this session participants move further into the intricacies of negotiations such as multi-party negotiations and international negotiations.
Negotiations – Tips and Techniques for Successful Negotiations
There are proven practical negotiation strategies that can make a significant difference to leaders and their organizations. While we negotiate every day, not every individual has the skills to negotiate in the most effective manner. This session offers the opportunity to strengthen career-enhancing management skills as a successful negotiator, in dealing with difficult people and overcoming hard bargainers, and in managing difficult business conversations.
This session focuses on best-practices in negotiations and shares real-world, immediately applicable tips for better outcomes. This session can be offered in a shorter format than the previous courses on the topic.
Performance Management
During this session, participants learn ways to translate the performance management process into concrete and actionable steps that will achieve results through enhanced performance.
Leaders learn how to better manage employee performance through:
- Planning – setting expectations and goals
- Monitoring – consistently measuring performance and providing ongoing feedback
- Developing – increasing the capacity of employees to perform
- Rating – evaluating performance against standards
- Rewarding – recognizing employees for performance
Strategy
Strategy – Strategic Thinking
Strategic thinking is a crucial part of success in any organization. The strategic session starts with an understanding of what strategy is and how it exists at multiple levels in organizations. The session provides a global, academic view of strategies and different approach to defining and managing strategy. The skill building component of this session focuses on how to conceptualize, formulate and share strategy as well as how to translate the strategy into understandable, actionable goals.
Strategy – Developing Business Strategy
This one-day session will encourage participants to think bigger picture and more long-term about the business and their role in it. The conversation will turn from the current, industry-driven focus and ask participants to consider the long view of the business and best practices of companies inside and outside their industry. Through conversations around strategy development and execution, new and emerging markets, and market forces; the participants will develop a more global mindset and begin to think differently about business strategy.
Strategy – Breakthrough Strategic Planning
This session is built on the Hoshin model developed in Japan in the 1960’s for strategic planning. The system translates the vision achievement into action plans that ensure goal achievement. Participants will learn three of the Hoshin breakthrough planning tools so that leaders can use them immediately when they return to work. The session is highly interactive; table groups of leaders will practice using each of the tools and will receive detailed information on how to use them in their organizations. Additionally, the participants will be able to see examples of complete strategic plans using these breakthrough planning methods.
Participants will use an actual business goal as an example to work through the described tools of breakthrough strategic planning. The leadership team at the organization will be asked to identify a goal for the participants to consider during the session, which provides not only a richer experience for the participants but also provides the company with great content and thoughts about the current business challenge.
Teams
Teams – Building Effective Teams
Leading teams effectively has become a critical management skill as more of the organizational goals are met through teamwork. This session discusses the difference between groups and teams, getting the right people on the team, assessing members of a team, managing strengths of team members, and how to manage a team to effectively reach goals. The overarching goal of the session is how to interact more effectively in teams to produce greater results.
Teams – Managing in Turbulent Times: The Manager’s Role in Leading High-Performance Teams
In this engaging session, participants learn about the skills and knowledge essential for management effectiveness in today’s rapidly changing world. Effective leadership and management begin with a high level of self-awareness. Heightened self-awareness helps leaders leverage their natural strengths and helps them find ways to develop new areas of expertise in a positive, productive way.
The session includes a focus on the team perspective during which participants learn the attributes of high-performance work teams, as well as problems that plague ineffective teams. They also learn about different types of teams and how to maximize the performance of any team.
Capstone Course
In a multiple session leadership course, we recommend a capstone session that connects all the components of the program and highlights developing an action plan. Participants develop an individual plan to implement their key leanings from the program and consider how to link this knowledge to business results.
Many of the sessions above include additional tools for the participants to reinforce the classroom learning and facilitation. From individual assessments, such as the MBTI and DiSC Profile, to Harvard cases or articles, our facilitators choose assessments and tools that support the learning outcomes for the participants and the session. Each is designed to enhance the classroom experience and add value to the program session.
